How To: Survive Heels in San Francisco | August 21, 2009

Heels are such an important part of most women’s wardrobes. Since moving to San Francisco, I have challenged myself to wear them as much as possible. Heels have the ability to make a woman feel confident and strong. However, it can be rough wearing them up sprawling city blocks and hill covered San Francisco. There are tricks and tips to keeping your feet fresh and unmangled by the end of the day. Here are just a few tips I have discovered along my ultra-femme journey through the city:

-Dr. Scholl’s is your best friend. The company makes a variety of inserts for all types of shoes, including high heels. The inserts can also be cut down to any size, starting at size 10. There are several textures to choose from and they truly help with arch and back pain that can come from wearing heels all day.

-Shop smart. There are several retailers out there today that carry comfortable yet stylish shoes, such as Aerosoles. I know you’re thinking that your grandmother is a proud advocate of Aerosoles, however after shopping around I have found that they carry plenty of fashionable styles. Other retailers such as Urban Outfitters or Aldo carry styles that can fit your feet just right. All it takes to find the right fit is lots and lots of trying on! You’ll know it when you feel it.

-Be smart about your routes. Don’t take the most steep block in the city when you could have easily hopped on the Muni to get to your destination. If you know you’ll be walking excessively during the day, avoid wearing you 7″ spike heels. Try a smart yet sassy wedge. Think about your day’s activities before you head out the door.

-Take care of your little friends. It is important to love on your feet from time to time to ensure they stay ready for the small amounts of abuse you put them through everyday. Use foot scrubs and lotions or convince your roommate/boyfriend/girlfriend to massage them from time to time. Some of my favorite products can be found at The Body Shop and come in several delicious scents.

It might take some getting used to, but I have been so happy in my heels. I feel like a strong woman every time I step out of the house. I am ready for my day and night!
